Welcome to 3rd grade! I’m looking forward to another great year. We’ve been in school for one month now and things are moving along. The students are settling in to my expectations and schedule. I’m getting to know each one of them and their strengths.
If you have not registered for Engrade please remember to do so. This will keep you up to date on your child’s grades. You will notice is they are missing any assignments, if they fail an assignment, or how great they are doing.
In Religion we started with discussing the Family of God. In this unit we talked about God’s creation and the Church community. We have discussed why it’s important to be a member of God’s Church community. Our next unit we’ll be starting next week will be on responding to God.
In reading we finished our first theme selection on Adventures. We will be doing the theme skills test toward the end of the week. Our next themed reading series will be Celebrating Traditions. If any family member has a special tradition they celebrate please come join our class and share your tradition. Keep up the homework reading. Remember it will count as part of their reading grade at the end of each quarter.
Spelling is moving along good. Please remember to do the Dear Parent activity at home with your child. This activity is part of the spelling test. I do not give pre-test on Monday and test on Friday. The way this program is set up, there are many mini lesson that I do throughout the week. Some weeks there is one lesson and sometimes there might be three lessons. So, the spelling test may not fall on Friday’s.
ADDITION - This is what we are on now. We started with place value and rounding. The caught on really good with rounding. We started doing column addition. There will be one lesson where I will introduce the calculator. I do not allow the calculator during math lesson, but this one lesson they get to use it. So when they bring their work home and say Mrs. Punjak said, “I can use a calculator”, it’s true for the one lesson. Practice the math facts daily with your child.
What is a sentence? What makes up a sentence? What kind of sentences are there? These are a few of the questions we answered in Language the last month. We will be finishing up the unit shortly and moving on to nouns.
A few Notes:
MAPS testing today and Thursday this week for 3rd grade. Next week Tuesday they will have their last MAPS test. Make sure they get a good nights rest and eat a good breakfast these days.
On Oct. 23rd, 3rd grade will host the Liturgy. We will be celebrating Native American Mass – Saint Katerie. Please come join us.
Each child needs to remember to bring their own snack for break each day.
I will be looking for a Room Parent who can help in the classroom if needed on special occasions and to help with calling other 3rd grade parents. This job can be split between two parents.

Happy 4th Quarter
It’s been a while since I last posted. So, I’ll try to sum up what has been going on.
For religion we learned and discussed about the 40 days of Lent, Holy Week and Easter. We are finishing up the unit on The Body of Christ. The next unit we will cover talks about The Catholic Church.
We have been working hard with a few Reading Writing Workshop lessons. We finished our research paper. The students enjoyed this so much they asked if they could do another one. I think we’ll have time at the end of the year; I just might throw another in. We just finished up writing about descriptions. On Monday we will start reading them to the class. We are starting our last theme in the reading series on smart solutions. This is a fun theme.
Oh math is going great. I love when the kids catch onto multiplication and division. The only thing they need to do is keep reviewing facts. It seems like when they get to 4th grade they have forgotten all their facts. Whenever you’re in the car traveling, doing dishes, folding clothes, (assuming your child helps you) practice the facts. We will be starting double division shortly. This gets a little hard for some kids. I only need to introduce it, so I don’t spend a lot of time drilling them on how to do long division
In spelling we are just moving along. We are learning new sight words, homophones, homographs, different letter sounds, syllables and many other spelling skills.
In language we just finished up the unit on verbs. We have started the next unit on adjectives. Adjectives are fun because they are describing words. I try to get the kids to use as many adjectives in all their writing and even when their telling me a story.
A few short notes:
Wednesday, April 10, 3rd grade will be hosting the Liturgy. Please join us if you can.
I will be taking some time off during April to spend with my daughter and their first child, my first grandchild. I have a sub all lined up and she will do a great job with the students. I ask that you just remind your child to be respectful and kind to the sub-teacher.
May is usually time for field trips. Thursday, May 30th, 3rd and 4th grade will being going to Hayward. I am also working on our annual trip to Cable Museum. No date has been set for this yet. Third grade usually goes to UMD Planetarium, but with Ms. Sukanen teaching science I’m not sure we’ll get there. If not I will definitely include them next year.

February Blog
February
Here we are starting, February, the 6th month of school. That means only 3 months to go! I’m very excited to be back teaching. I really missed teaching them. Yeah I was in the room but I love teaching. This group of students is awesome. They really want to learn. Thanks to all of you for doing such a great job with them.
This month is a very busy month. Here are the up coming events you need to be aware of.
Feb. 7th - Parent/Teacher Conferences. Hopefully I will see everyone that evening.
Feb. 12th – Spelling Bee
Congratulations to our 5 contestants from 3rd grade who qualified for the Spelling Bee; Nakiah, Jason, Morgan, Ross, & Ethan
3 – 5 grades 10:15 – 11:30
6 – 8 grades 12:30 – 1:45

Please join us if you can.
Feb 13th – Field trip to Marengo Valley School. I will need drivers. This is the description we received for the presentation.
While her life was tragically cut short during the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999, Rachel Joy Scott’s shining example of kindness and compassion was not defeated that day. Come hear the inspiring true story of one girl’s dream being fulfilled over a decade after her death. The presentation is a powerful reminder of the little tings we can do every day to make our world a better place.
Feb. 14th - Valentine Party in the afternoon. Have your child buy or make valentine cards for each student in the class. The class list is attached. If you would like to send in a small treat or drink it would be appreciated.
Feb. 15th – Early release day
Feb. 18th – No School
Feb. 19th – 3 – 8 grades going to “Little Prince” at the Chequamegon Theater. This will be a walking field trip. The cost will be $2.00 per student. The field trip slip will be coming home next week.
I am very proud of these 3rd graders learning their multiplication. They are catching on very quickly. Now I need your help in memorizing the facts. Have them learn the facts 0 – 5 to start. Practice, practice, practice.

December 12th
We will be having a small Christmas Party on Thursday, Dec. 20nd , in the afternoon. We will have a gift exchange. A girl will buy a girl gift and a boy will buy a gift for a boy. Only put your child’s name on the gift. I’m not really sure of the cost of kids gifts so I will say, spend around $5.00 to $8.00. I understand money is really tight around Christmas, so if for some reason your child can not buy a gift please let me know and I can help out. I don’t want any child going home sad.
A few other dates to remember:
Thursday, December 13th K-8 Christmas Program – be here by 6:10 P.M.
Monday, December 17th Baby Jesus Birthday Party – Please bring in a item for a baby.
Thursday, December 20th Christmas Store – If you would like your child to buy gift for family and relatives please send name tags and money this day.

October News
Here we are at the end of 1st quarter! Unbelievable! Where has the time gone? We have accomplished a lot since the first day of school. Religion we have talked about the Church Community and why it’s important to belong to a Church community. Spelling we have learned many new words that we use every day. I would like to thank the parents for helping your child with the at home activity sheet. It shows when they do the test. We have covered place value, odd & even, ordering, comparing, estimating, and rounding numbers. This week they started working with money. Next week they will be learning time in the minutes and seconds and elapsed time. In reading they have read stories about adventures and traditions. If your family has traditions that are passed on from generation to generations, please share them with your child. Language we have finished our first unit on sentences. I will expect complete sentences. A complete sentence has to begin with a capital letter, have a subject and predicate and end with some punctuation. We are working on nouns in the next unit.
I teach the 4th grade religion class so, Ms. Sukanen teaches 3rd grade Social Studies and Science. This is why you may not see their grade on Engrade for science or social studies. I you have not yet registered please do. You can keep up to date with your child’s progress.
You probably already have heard from your child that I have a student teacher from Northland College. Mark Pennell will be with us for the first semester. He has been teaching most the curriculum now. Within the next two weeks he will have total control of the classroom. I will be here supervising him and keeping an eye on the students.
If you have time please come join us for the Veterans Program at 2:00 PM on Nov. 12th. The 3rd and 4th grades are doing a musical skit. Please join us.
A few important dates coming up:
Nov. 6th end of first quarter
Nov. 7th movie night at the visitors center 6:00 PM - FREE
Nov. 9th early release
Nov. 12th Veterans Program
Nov. 13th McTeacher night 4 – 8 PM
Nov. 15th Parent/Teacher conferences
Nov. 21 – 23 No School – Thanksgiving Break

WOW! We’re back to school. What a wonderful group of students I have this year. They appear to be eager to learn. I have found out they are awesome in math. It should be a fun year. So far we have gotten through our beginning assessment for fluency reading, comprehension reading, spelling and math. Now I can look at where I need to go with these results.
This year I’m doing my grading online. Every family should have received their access code to Engrade. Please register and keep checking your child’s grades. I will not be sending home any grades throughout the quarter/year. Please contact me if you have not received your code.
The magazine sales started Wed., Sept. 12, 2012. Please help support the school raise money. This is one of the big fundraiser we do. Ask all your friends, relatives, and co-workers to purchase magazines from your child. If you know of anyone at an eye clinic, doctor clinic or someplace where they orders several magazines, please ask them if they would help support Our Lady of the Lake.
The back to school dinner last night was good. I was little disappointed that I didn’t get to meet many of my families, but hopefully you will stop in for a visit. I did have a nice visit with the two families that did attend. We had lots of food and a nice speech for the out going teachers and Ms. Sara and Mr. Bell. We will miss them all greatly. God bless them in their new adventures.
I’m looking for some bean bags or large pillows to be donated to my classroom. The students like to relax on them while silent reading.
I look forward to a wonderful year full of fun and exciting events.

Where has the month gone? I can’t believe Thursday is the first of December. Advent started this past weekend. Christmas will be just around the corner. This means we will be doing many special activities this month preparing for Baby Jesus.
I pray that everyone had a thankful Thanksgiving. I traveled to Casa Grande, AZ to visit my daughter and new son-in-law and had a restful and peaceful vacation.
Thank you for the extra help you gave your child with the math subtraction. Please keep doing math problems with them on your own. We will be starting multiplication next week. I will teach several strategies on multiplication and then Chapter 7 - 2, 5, 3 multiplication facts, Chapter 8 - 0, 1, 4 multiplication facts , Chapter 9 – 6, 7, 8 multiplication facts , and Chapter 10 – 9 & 10 multiplication facts. Help you child learn all their 2’s first, then the 5’s, then 3’s, etc. I really look forward to teaching multiplication. The kids are eager to learn multiplication.
Remember to keep reading every night, mark the calendar in their planner, and sign weekly. This does count as part of their reading grade. If they read every night it will help improve their fluency in reading. If you are asking them question about what they read this will help with reading comprehension. So if they are reading nightly and reading at school we should see an improvement in their reading fluency, comprehension and their love to read.
As I mentioned earlier the season of Advent started last Sunday. Most of the religion lessons during December will be about Advent.
I would like to thank Mrs. Dolson-Mukka for coming into the 3rd grade and teaching about vertebrates and invertebrates. The kids loved to watch one of their classmates dress up as a bug. He wasn’t to happy about it, but the kids had fun learning the parts.
I have the students work on one page a day in their cursive writing books. They are doing really good. If you can encourage them to practice cursive writing a little at home would be great. We are maybe through ½ the lower case letters. Then we’ll start on the capital letters.
Here is a look at 3rd grades calendar for the month of December.
December 9th – School Christmas Program at 6:30
Dec. 15th – Baby Jesus Party
Dec. 19th – Caroling
Dec. 20th – Christmas Store
Dec. 23rd – Classroom party
